Exploring India 2009 – Tiruchirapalli
Sep 27
They said all great journeys begin with a small steps and Tiruchirapalli (or Trichy) is more than a small step. Remembering the name itself is no small feat. Luckily it has a nickname or else I will end up calling it “teeroo-chappatti” or something like that. Stepping on the soil of this great nation means a lot to me. It was a dream came true and a promise fulfilled. I always wanted to visit India. I don’t know why. I don’t watch Indian movies (does Slumdog Millionaire counts?) or listen to Indian songs. The only things I can relate to India in my daily life are my friends’ Deepavali open house, “kacang putih” and “roti canai”. Oh wait, there is no roti canai in India. I also promised my sister that I would visit her before she finishes her studies in India. Since she came back to Malaysia during her semester break, I decided to escort her back to her campus when her holiday ends.
So here I am, in India for the first time with my sister. Somehow she doesn’t look as enthusiastic as I am. Can’t blame her. She has been living here for more than a year. Before we catch our train to Mangalore tomorrow, we decided to explore the place a little bit with the help from Lonely Planet. After that, we stayed in a room at the train station which was a bad choice because of the noises. Now I know how loud a train’s horn can be. The announcements were also very annoying because they were done in 3 languages; English, Hindi and Tamil.
