The Famous Stone of Bukit Minyak
Oct 19
There are many famous stones around the world.
Firstly, one of my favorite stone is the English rock band; The Rolling Stones. Even though they are uncles now, but they still rock.
Then who can forget the hot auntie Sharon Stone in the leg crossing scene in Basic Instinct?
How about that head-bashing-body-throwing machine from WWE; Stone Cold Steve Austin? He really lives up to his name. I bet certain parts of his body is really as hard as a stone.
We also have a stone that can predict today’s weather with amazing accuracy.
However, I am proud to say that we have a stone that is equally famous, mystical and powerful at our very own backyard. Introducing the ‘sacred’ stone of Bukit Minyak. This is yet another method to get the winning numbers of Magnum, Toto or Damacai. Penangites no longer need to travel to Taiping and get their hands dirty lucky by caressing the wild boars.
This is the location you should be if you want to be filthy rich overnight.
This stone is so famous that it was featured in major newspapers in Malaysia. You can read about it in The Star here and here.

4-digit punters rubbing the stone frantically looking for numbers
At the beginning, the stone was stumbled by some workers clearing the land for some kind of development. They tried to remove the stone but it cannot be lifted. So they pushed the stone away and found snakes underneath it. It is learned that one the worker killed the snakes. Shortly after that, he fell ill. Maybe he was overwhelmed by guilts or unknowingly bitten by the snakes. Instead of going to the doctor, don’t know where he got the idea of going back to the stone and apologized to the stone. As you can guess it, he got cured and the stories spread like wildfire that it is a magical stone.
When stories of magical stone or anything magical reach the “puak kiau kui”, naturally all they can think of are numbers. So one by one came and tried their luck. Those who did not win anything were ignored and those who are lucky enough to win become testimonials of the stone’s magical power. That is how the stone became an instant hit among 4 digit punters. They came by bus load. Some came from as far as Johor or Singapore and they all came just to worship to a stone.
Like bees flock to honey, the empty plot of land attracted all kind of businesses. You could find stalls selling praying peripheral, drinks, foods and fortunetelling services. The area became so congested that prompted the local municipal council to move the stone to a Chinese temple at a nearby housing area.

RM5 for praying peripheral. Small investment for big fortune, eh?

Smart business strategy. Must buy from the temple. Cannot pray with flowers and holy water brought by ourselves.

Donate more money for better chances.

A place for Chinese and Indian share the same dream together. This is what I call muhibah.

Parking at the temple’s premises also need to pay.
The funny thing about this is, a day after the stone is moved, another stone was erected to replace the original one and still people came to worship it. Gradually, news of the relocation has spread, lesser and lesser people went to the original location. 15 days after the relocation, I still saw 2 -3 people still worshiping the ‘fake’ stone. However, most of the stalls were not there anymore.

Only left few stalls at the original location
Well I can’t say the stone is not magical at all. It is magical to see how a stone can generate new source of income to a handful of traders. One can only fascinate at how easy for gamblers to part with their money. No wonder you still can see people got cheated thousands for ringgit for a magical stone in the news. From this case, I can see that they are still plenty of prospects for the con men.
Other than that, one ‘magical’ thing did happen to me right after I visited the stone. I was involved in a car accident. I never involved in any car accident in my 10 years driving experience before and somehow I got one right after I visited the stone. How fucking ‘lucky’ I am!
